Goal of the event:
Raise the awareness of disability in general, and blindness in particular, between the erasmus students who are carrying out their Erasmus studies in Spain. So that, putting in the shoes of blind people in a common activity which is dancing salsa.
Short description of the event:
In our weekly schedule we have every monday salsa lessons. Taking advantage of the ExchangeAbility Week, we carried out an activity related to this. Erasmus students, as usual, came to receive salsa lesson. After a while, they started dancing it with their eyes covered. Firstly, just one member of the couple was dancing with covered eyes, so they had to follow their partners´ steps, and the teacher´s instructions. Later, the roles changed, and the other member had to guide the steps of their partner. Once, everyone had experienced what you feel dancing without seeing anything and, on the other way around, guiding a person who cannot see, we covered the couple eyes, which means none could see at all. They should pay more attention carefully to the music, and the teacher´s instructions.
How did your event go?:
In general, all the students were curious to dance with covered eyes. Nevertheless, students felt insecure and clumsy dancing with covered eyes. Moreover, they should take more care when their partners could not see. They told us that normally they did not give much importance to the music and the teacher´s instructions, and now it was more important.
They could experiment what blind people feel, and they realized how difficult it is.
So, we could say our goal was enriched.
