Goal of the event:
Building capacities of students without disabilities in order for them to help their fellow students with disabilities. Pointing out the importance of sign language knowledge among students in order for them to understand deaf people. Promotion of the international week of deaf among people without disabilities and raising awareness about the problems of people with hearing disabilities.
Short description of the event:
We organised Sign language workshops in order to provide the basic knowledge of communication through this channel for students without disabilities and build their capacities to better understand and help students with hearing disabilities. We had two days of workshops and each day lasted for 5 hours, first part was the short introduction to Sign language and a bit of theory about it and then we had practical sessions where the educators provided the participants with the basic skills of sign language. For example how to count, how to spell your name, how to ask for directions, how to find your way on the faculty. At the end of practical part there was an opportunity for the participants to test their knowledge and repeat all the things they learned in a quiz where they got small treats and prizes.
How did your event go?:
Participants were competitive, energetic and motivated, they were learning through practice, and the room was full of joyful people eager to learn which at the end of the long day felt even more energetic and empowered. The thing which could be promoted is organisation of the event for bigger crowd or trying to organise it in non formal surroundings such as parks or cafes.
