Goal of the event:
The first goal of this event was to raise awareness about disabilities. For local, international or Erasmus students to get information and become more educated in this topic. ESN organization to be known as accessible to all kind of disabilities. For center visitors/ disabled people to have possibility express themselves, to show reality, how their life goes.
Short description of the event:
our section with other ESN sections and Students visit "Kauno Viltis". Participants had possibility to hear from people with disabilities about their life, what they like to do and what is important for them. Also we learn more about the activities of the day center which works with them. What are their struggles, how they overcome problems in their everyday activities. With the kauno viltis Social Workers we spoke about activities which are interested for visitors of their center, learned more information about different disabilities and working skills.
Students got more educated, learned new information about disabilities, payed attention to details they never thought about, people with disabilities were talking about their experiences, they were giving to students questions, we had nice talk. They showed us what they are learning at the center, also we had possibility to see their handmade things. We were lucky and got small presents from them for the memories.
How did your event go?:
As this event was our first visit of center for people with disabilities, it was more introduction and informative event. We introduced ourselves and get know each other closer. In the beginning it was a bit hard to speak and everyone was shy but later we discussed a lot and had fun.
Students were interested about volunteering, the center is open to host people who are interested in this topic, they were very happy to hear it. As we discussed, they can use our help a lot in everyday activities. If students have some ideas they can support it and make them happen together with people with disabilities. Most of the participants met first time disabled people in life. They were very excited and wanted to stay longer and speak with them. It was really nice evening. Both sides were happy about the chance spending time together.
