Goal of the event:
Erasmus students gain respect for the sporting abilities of Wheelchair Basketball athletes and achieve understanding of what team
sport in a wheelchair involves. To experience Basketball skills (eg, dribbling, passing, catching, shooting, manipulate wheelchair around the Basketball court, pick up a ball from the floor) from a sitting position and to learn about the rules of Wheelchair Basketball.
Short description of the event:
Wheelchair basketball is basketball played by people with varying physical disabilities that disqualify them from playing an able-bodied sport. The object of the game is to score the most points in the opposing team’s basket, just like able-bodied basketball. Players must not ‘travel’ with the ball and are required to throw or bounce the ball after every two pushes of their wheelchair. The team with the most points at the end of the game, wins. Any player who is not able to play basketball standing up due to a physical disability is eligible to play Wheelchair Basketball, although some players do not use wheelchairs in their daily lives.
Last year Yildiz Technical University and Bahcesehir University Erasmus students played a wheel chair basketball match versus professional wheel chair team Istanbul Fatih Yıldızlar Sport Club which takes place in Turkish 1. league. This year we wanted to sport the them at the match and we got together to watch this very special match.on world disability day.
How did your event go?:
A few minutes after the game started, excitement transformed the crowd and our erasmus students. Fans respected the athletes and treated them just as they would professionals. "How can you lose this?" and "You gotta stop the three-pointers!" were two phrases heard here and there. With equal expectations, it fulfills the mission of equality.
